Big Bear High School student to attend a STEM conference | Outlook ... - Big Bear Grizzly

Emma Karns, an incoming senior at Big Bear High School isnt exactly sure how she was nominated to be a delegate to the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Lowell, Massachusetts, but shes pretty sure why. I have a 4.0 GPA (grade point average) in school and Im good at math and science, Karns said.

Karns represents Big Bear High School at the congress, sponsored by the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists. The honors-only program is for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics, also known as STEM. Karns is eligible to attend this summer, but has opted to attend in 2018 in order to travel to Europe this year with a school group.

During the three-day congress, Karns will hear professors, deans of top tech universities, Nobel laureates and National Medal of Science recipients talk about leading scientific research and the future of science and technology. Karns earns a college credit by attending.

I dont think Ill get in, but I want to go to Clemson University in South Carolina, Karns said. They have a good language program for interpreting for sign language, and thats what I want to do. Her backup plan is to be an engineer.

Chartered in 2014, the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists is a nonpartisan institution working outside government in a public-private partnership to identify, encourage and mentor students who wish to devote their lives to the service of humanity as scientists or technologists.
